Growing THE BEST Spring Garden by Charlie Albone

Dsc 4597Spring is a magical time for gardeners.

The days grow longer, the weather warms up, and our gardens awaken from their winter slumber.

To help you make the most of this vibrant season, I have compiled some important tips for growing THE BEST spring garden.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, these guidelines will ensure your garden thrives.

Prepare Your Soil

Dsc 4715 2Healthy soil is the foundation of a flourishing garden.

To enrich your soil, incorporate manures or compost such as Richgro Black Marvel Garden Compost

It is a blend of fully composted organics that will provide your new or existing garden with a boost of natural organic nutrients to ensure strong, healthy, and colourful plants and vegetables all year round. It helps retain moisture and nutrients in the soil, and give your plants some long lasting food throughout the season.

For new beds, dig through the soil and for existing garden beds, simply add to the surface of the soil and lightly work it in.

For an extra boost, mix in some Richgro Blood and Bone to promote healthy root growth.

By fertilising now with a slower release fertiliser such as Blood and Bone its nutrients will be released slowly and when needed.

Choose your plants wisely

DaffodilsSpring is the perfect time to plant a variety of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. When selecting plants, consider their specific needs and choose varieties suited to your climate and soil conditions.

Flowers

Opt for spring favourites like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths (these bulbs need planting earlier for a spring display). Also lavender or foxgloves to add vibrant colours to your garden. For continuous blooms, mix in perennials such as peonies and irises.

Vegetables

Start your vegetable garden with cool season crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas. As the weather warms, you can introduce tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

Herbs

Herbs like basil, parsley, and coriander thrive in spring. Plant them in well-drained soil and ensure they receive plenty of sunlight.

Follow Proper Planting Techniques

Planting Hi ResProper planting techniques are crucial for the success of your garden. Here are some steps to follow:

Digging the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the plant’s root ball. This allows the roots to spread and establish more easily.

Preparing the Root Ball: Before planting, soak the root ball in water to ensure its thoroughly moist. If the roots are tangled, gently tease them apart.

Planting: Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, pressing firmly to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting.

Mulching: Apply a layer of Richgro Pinebark Mulch around your plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Water Wisely

Dsc 4200Proper watering is essential, especially in the early stages of growth.

Water your garden deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

This encourages deep root growth. Deliver water directly to the roots, reducing evaporation and water waste.
