Gardening For January

The most important tip in January is to make sure your garden stays well hydrated over this hotter period. Be sure to add or top up mulch and apply a soil wetter to your entire garden and pots.

Keep your garden healthy and waterwise

Mulch, mulch and more mulch. This will protect delicate roots from extremely hot temperatures. Mulch will help retain moisture in the soil and hence decrease the amount of watering required.

Re-apply Ezi-Wet Water Saving Soil Wetter to the whole garden if you are finding the water beading and running off the soil surface.

Roses and Flowering Plants

Make sure you summer prune your roses after they have finished flowering. This will assist in repeat flowering and maintain the shape of the plant.  Cut back the flowering stems to about two or three sets of leaves. Give them a good watering, then feed using Richgro Black Marvel Premium Rose Food.

While you are at it, give your annual flowers a good feed and a dose of Ezi-Wet soil wetter. Also top up your mulch to have your flowers not only looking great but healthy and hydrated as well.

Plant up large bowls with succulents. They are ideal for hot dry positions where nothing else will grow.

Fruit and Vegetables

Time to plant tropical fruiting trees to ensure they get established before the cold weather sets in. They thrive in the heat.

Prune Apricots, Nectarines and Peaches immediately after fruiting. This reduces the amount of water they need over summer and the new growth will be fruiting wood for next season.

Feed existing vegetables and be sure to add mulch to those in raised planter boxes as this soil will dry out a lot quicker in the hot weather.

Lawn and Turf Maintenance

Lift mower blades when mowing the lawn. A longer blade of grass creates a larger shadow and shades the lawn’s root system, thus reducing evaporation and the temperature of the soil.

Top dress to level out any holes and dips. Apply a soil wetter to improve watering in hotter weather.

If Black beetles come up from holes in lawns, treat with Richgro Lawn Beetle and Grub Killa. If you have a brown dead patch in your lawn and the roots come away easily, this is a good sign you have black beetle.

Potted Gardens

Protect your pot plants while you are away this summer. A small amount of Richgro Water Storage Crystals applied to each pot will help keep your plants watered and fed for up to 3 weeks so you can enjoy your well deserved break.

Mulch the top of the pots. If you notice that soils are very dry and the water sits on top rather than drain into the soil, apply Ezi-Wet soil wetter – it helps the water in.
